Local Government District of Pinawa
Pinawa, one of Manitoba's first planned communities, was built
between 1961 and 1963. The community is set along the Winnipeg River at the
entrance to Lake Sylvia. Bounded on the north by the Pinawa Channel, the town
serves as a water gateway to the Whiteshell Provincial Park, Manitoba's premier
vacationland. The diverse community of 1500 residents lies between Lac du Bonnet
and Whiteshell Provincial Park, and is 110 kilometres north east of the
province's capital City of Winnipeg.

Economy
Pinawa was built primarily by
Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL) to house research and support
staff and their families. Despite recent downsizing, AECL is still
Pinawa's largest employer. Pinawa is also home to employees of
Tantalum Mining Corporation, Manitoba Conservation, Manitoba
Hydro, North Eastman Health Authority and several other companies based on the natural resources of
peat moss, pulpwood and tourism. The local government and
schools also continue to be significant employers in town. Building
on the strength of local scientific and engineering expertise, a
number of new companies have formed in the last decade in the areas
of environmental consulting, computer services, and material
processing and analysis. Internet-based retail businesses and
telecommuting have also emerged, while many local services continue
to be met through many home-based businesses. During summer and
fall, local accommodation, restaurant and retail businesses cater to
hundreds of golfers, vacationers, fishers and hunters who travel
through the region. In the winter, the area is a haven for
snowmobilers and cross-country skiers, where hundreds of kilometres
of groomed trails attract riders and participants from all across
the continent.

Welcome to Pinawa! This hidden gem
in Eastern Manitoba has something for everyone. Situated on the Winnipeg River, just 110 kilometres
from Winnipeg, the town is a recreation paradise, offering sailing, canoeing, kayaking, fishing, hiking,
swimming, snowmobiling and cross-country skiing. It is home to an 18-hole
Championship Golf Course, one of the provinces best courses, along the shores of the
Winnipeg River and Pinawa Channel.
Pinawa derives its name from the First Nations people who lived in the area
prior to the explorer La Vérendrye's arrival along the historic Winnipeg River route.
This particular area was referred to as "pinnowok", or "calm waters". The Pinawa Heritage Sundial,
located at the marina, portrays the
history of the region and the whimsical Pinawa Mall Murals, created by local artists, lead you
through Pinawa's past and present.
Hikers of all skill levels will delight in exploring Pinawa's extensive trail system. Grab the kids, take a relaxing
walk along the riverfront Ironwood Trail and look for the rare Ironwood trees,
and small trees carved by a
local artist. Continue along the 10-kilometre Heritage Channel Walk, bounce, if you dare,
across the Suspension Bridge,
relax and enjoy the scenery at the Pavilion. Hot after a day of trekking?
You're welcome to cool off at the beach or
our heated outdoor pool. For the more adventuresome, Pinawa's section of the Trans Canada Trail,
winds through mixed terrain from the
Seven Sisters Hydro Generating Station to the Pinawa Dam Provincial Park.
Are sports more your speed? Adults and
kids can take advantage of four-season recreation including public
skating rinks, well-groomed ski and snowmobile trails, and soccer fields in summer.
The public beach is equipped with a play structure, picnic shelter, volleyball court and
diving dock. The Pinawa Pool offers lessons as well as designated times for public swimming.
The four-season Pinawa Club
is the place for tennis, golf, curling and bridge.
People are choosing Pinawa's
quality of lifestyle for recreation, cottage living and a place to do business.
In the Deer Capital of Manitoba on a walk or bike to work, deer are a common sight.
Our excellent schools, full daycare services, public
library, bike paths and playgrounds make it a great place to raise a family.
