The first scientific evidence of gold potential in the Bissett area came to light in the 1900 Geological Survey of Canada report by J.B. Tyrell.  but more than a decade would pass before there was a discovery of gold in the area.  In March 1911, Duncan Two-hearts lead E.A. Pelletier to Rice Lake where a boulder of rust quartz contained gold.  The showing was impressive enough for Pelletier to stake a claim.  The rest is history.  Bissett has been the site for gold exploration under different mining companies from San Antonio Mines, Ltd, New Forty Four, REA Gold Corp, Harmony Gold and currently by Rice Lake Gold Corporation.  At the peak of the gold mining successes 250 people lived and worked in the town.

The Department of Conservation operates out of Bissett from which local staff response to the regions needs from May to October, such as fire fighting and enforcement of Conservation regulations pertaining to land and resources.  Logging and tourism (fishing and camping and fly out services to remote lodges) are other components of employment in the Bissett region
