Rural Municipality of Whitemouth
The R.M. of Whitemouth is true to its Manitoba roots – diversified geological beauty mixed with friendly and courteous community spirit. The municipality is located one hour east of Winnipeg in a transitional zone between the boreal forest of the majestic Canadian Shield and the fertile grasslands of the Canadian plains. A gateway to the Whiteshell Provincial Park, the R.M. offers some of the most unique scenery and natural habitat in the southern part of the province. Three endangered species, the Carmine shiner, the Horney Head Chub and the Northern Brook Lamprey are found only in the Whitemouth River. Without question the most intriguing feature of the R.M. is the Whitemouth River itself. The river extends from Whitemouth Lake in the SE corner of the province to Seven Sisters and is like no other in Manitoba. The river is perfect for fishing, kayaking, canoeing and tubing. Through a series of rapids and falls it flows to its confluence with the Winnipeg River at the scenic Whitemouth Falls. Cooks Falls Campground (348-7752) along the Whitemouth River is a beautiful site to pitch a tent after a long day on the water. Snowmobile trails abound in this winter wonderland as the Eastman-Snopal Trail www.eastmansnowpals.com connects with the Whiteshell and Can-Am Trails. Visit www.snoman.mb.ca for more information and a complete trail map for Eastern Manitoba. For more information visit our website www.rmwhitemouth.com and watch for our free publication showcasing our municipality – 2008 R.M. of Whitemouth Gateway to the Whiteshell – at Travel MB Booths or local businesses.
Elma
Elma is nestled against the Whitemouth River at the junction of Hwy 11 & 15; a favorite playspot for white water kayaking. Enter the waters just south of Elma off Silver Bridge Rd and pull out just past Elma or continue downstream for more river adventures. Visit one of the local berry farms (Whiteshell Strawberry Farm (204) 348-7660 and Elma Raspberry Farm (204) 348-2080) located just north of town for a delicious summertime treat! Stop for refreshments in town and take a stroll down the street to catch a glimpse of the location where bootleggers and draft dodgers hid from the law in underground tunnels that have recently been discovered in the basement of an old house and pool hall.
Whitemouth
The river and the town of Whitemouth derived their names from the Whitemouth Falls; the white water tumbling over the falls at the mouth of the river. Amenities abound in this centrally located community along Hwy 44. Whitemouth Lions Park Campground just north of town is a spacious setting to camp and explore the local community. The campground is located adjacent to the community grounds which host the popular Whitemouth Sports Day Weekend slow pitch baseball tourney August 1-3, 2008. Enjoy a tour of the volunteer run Whitemouth Municipal Museum (Contact 348-7731 or 348-2109) showcasing an eclectic mixture of artifacts focusing mainly on agriculture, railroad and domestic. Take a walk through time and see how our pioneers lived on Heritage Days with various displays and demonstrations September 7, 2008.
River Hills
Located along PR 408 South of Seven Sisters, River Hills is a beautiful quiet community. Enjoy a picnic and take a stroll along the short walking track located on the River Hills Community Club grounds. East of River Hills along Homestead Road just past the bridge is the perfect location for a refreshing dip in the river and an easy entry/exit point for canoes and kayaks.
Seven Sisters Falls
Located along PR 307, a Gateway to the North Whiteshell Provincial Park, Seven Sisters Falls was originally named for the seven portages past seven sets of rapids along the Winnipeg River. Just north of town is the picturesque Whitemouth Falls Wayside Park: throw in a line, share a picnic or view the White Pelican. Gaze at the magnificent vistas from the Seven Sisters Hydro Dam which is Manitoba’s largest producer of electricity along the Winnipeg River (for Tour Bookings call (204) 367-5112). Seven Sisters Ski Trail is located across from Jennifer’s Restaurant and boasts 2.5, 5 and 7 km loops with the 7 km trail looping up to the Whitemouth Falls Park and the return path crossing by the Seven Sisters Falls Spillway. For snowmobile enthusiasts, a staging area exists north of PR 307 across from the Esso.
