Tourism and Recreation

The Springfield Recreation Commission, which employs a full time Recreation Director, works alongside various community clubs, and other interest groups to ensure that there are year round recreational and sport programs for all ages and skills levels. Sporting facilities in Springfield include two indoor arenas, three outdoor ice rinks, numerous ball diamonds and soccer pitches, outdoor basketball courts, sand volleyball, a tennis court and four well-maintained parks among which one can find play structures and picnic areas. The community is home to many service groups, clubs for seniors, women and youth, and a number of sports and athletic clubs. Additionally, the R.M. of Springfield boasts many strong equestrian and 4-H organizations. Many well known historical attractions can be found in Springfield. The Anola and District Museum has a pioneer village consisting of an original school, blacksmith shop, pioneer house, chapel and Springfield’s first fire truck. Cooks Creek is the oldest Galacian settlement in Canada and features two special attractions – Cooks Creek Heritage Museum and the Immaculate Conception Church and adjacent Grotto of Our Lady of the Lourdes. The Costume Museum is the first of its kind in Canada. Displays feature men’s, women’s and children’s clothing in an exciting living picture format and date back to 1766. A pioneer home circa 1886, a gift shop and a Tea Room complete the museum. Annual events in the R.M. of Springfield include the Taste of the Country, Costume Museum of Canada Annual Garden Party, Canada Day Celebrations, the Springfield Agricultural Society Fair, and Heritage Days at the Cooks Creek Museum.
