The mainline railway of the
Canadian National Railway (CN) and the Canadian Pacific
Railway(CP) both
cross through the North Eastman region and Winnipeg. The map below
represents local stations on a mainline as solid circles and shortline local stations as unfilled circles. As of January 1999,
the CN shortline railway running from Winnipeg to Pine Falls is the
Central
Manitoba Railway Inc. (CEMR) and is wholly owned by
Cando Contracting Ltd. The GWWD Railway is the Greater Winnipeg
Water District Railway which is owned and operated by the Water and
Waste Department of the City of Winnipeg. The
Burlington Northern Sante
Fe Railway (BNSF) mainline continues to Winnipeg as the Burlington
Northern Manitoba Ltd. Line. Although it is not shown on the map,
Via Rail, a cross-Canada passenger line, also passes through
Winnipeg and connects to the Hudson Bay Railway (as does CN) to go
to Churchill.
CN and CP have
alliances with other major North American
railroads creating a transportation network from coast-to-coast and
through the Mid-Continent Trade Corridor. CP has a
partnership with Union Pacific Railway streamlining shipping between
Canada, the United States and Mexico. CN’s alliance with Kansas City
Southern Railway has also created a faster and cost-effective
ship-rail-truck transportation system through the Mid-Continent
Trade Corridor. The following intermodal facilities map the
versatility of the railways to transport goods anywhere on the
continent and internationally.
