Local Government District of Pinawa

Industry

The LGD of Pinawa was founded in 1963 and built in cooperation with the Province of Manitoba and Central Mortgage and Housing to house the employees of AECL and their families.  The main industry until 1998 was Atomic Energy Canada Limited’s research center at Whiteshell Laboratories.  Pinawa is now focusing on tourism and other development as AECL has moved its research lab to Chalk River, Ontario.  The townsite has 19.2 hectares (about 48 acres) of unserviced, zoned property, available for light to medium industries.

 Tourism and Recreation

There are year-round activities available in Pinawa such as boating, rowing and sailing, and 18-hole golf course and cross-country skiing, as well as the newly opened Wilderness Edge Resort and Conference Centre.  Annual events in Pinawa include a Sailing Regatta in early July, a Triathlon and Birthday weekend in mid-July, the Pinawa Winter Festival in February and the Annual Manitoba Loppet (X-country skiing) in February.  Pinawa is in close proximity to three provincial parks – Whiteshell, Old Pinawa Dam Heritage Park and Nopiming.  The LGD participates in the Pinawa-Lac du Bonnet Recreation Commission, providing a full range of recreational activities.  The town boasts an arena, a Suspension Bride, community centre, marina and a Heritage Sundial.  Located adjacent to the beach is an outdoor heated swimming pool. The LGD, along with other regional Municipalities, have joined in as partners to the building of the Trans-Canada Trail.
